Audience Analysis Findings

After completing both my Survey Monkey questionnaire and focus group interview, I was able to discover a number of different things which will help me to target my audience. Firstly, that a male main character is generally preferred, so in order to target my audience I will need to use 'Jack' in a way that the audience will find attractive or like especially as my main character will be a woman. Secondly the speed of my opening is slow which would not seem to bother my target audience as they seemed unaffected by the speed of the opening, therefore if I create an element of mystery for the opening of my film it will be positively received by the audience. For example 'Fifty Shades of Grey' attracts a large audience due to 'curiosity', my opening will not be of the same curiosity but if the audience choose to watch a film based on this reason then it seems that my opening will be liked by the audience. Thirdly, the genre of rom-com's seemed to be enjoyed by my target audience and in order to successfully complete an opening of this genre there will need to be a boy and girl of desire and some kind of relationship conflict which my opening will aim to include. Finally I was unsure about exactly what clothing to use especially on Chloe but it appears that my target audience prefer day to day clothing but including an expensive element to it, for example in gossip girl their day to day clothing is more extravagant than your normal person's and this I would like to incorporate into Chloe's wardrobe.

Focus Group Interview

1. What films have you seen recently? Did you enjoy them?

2. So the genre of the film's were ..... would you say this is a film genre you typically see?

3. Do you like to have a main character like the men in The Great Gatsby and John Tucker Must die?

4. Or a film like Sex And The City or New Years Eve where you make you own choice about which character to like?

5. Does the actors in the film you are going to watch effect your choice to watch it?

6. So, therefore does looks matter when the main character is a man/ woman?

7. Which is you favourite film or one of your favourites? Why?

8. How does a film mixed between romance and action sound? Is there any films already like this that you can think of?

9. Imagine a film that follows the main character at the start yet doesn't show you who they are, would this annoy you? Or would it make it more interesting?

10. Do you like extravagant clothing in a movie or day to day clothing?

11. So would you like to see what you would normally wear or what you would like to wear?

12. Which is a better location: a party, a road, a train or have you got any suggestions?

Conclusion:
- The group talked about a film that was 30 years old (When Harry Met Sally) which is of a Romance genre. It was the younger women in the film that liked this film; aged 31. It was also mentioned that the women liked Rom-Com's which fits in with the genre of my film.
- A further genre which was mentioned was action and it appears that most action films have a main character as a male, this was then confirmed by the male of the group as being a good thing.
- It was stated that Rom-Com's generally have both a male and a female main character and this is needed for it to be a success.
- A favourite genre of film for one female was action but it was interesting to notice that she liked an action film which involved a female main character (Angelina Jolie), Another member who also commented on this gave an example of when Angelina Jolie actually helped the man in the film in order for him to succeed. This appears to occur quite often if a woman is used in an action genre film, e.g. 'The Heat', 'The Hunger Games', 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes', 'Lucy' etc.
- In terms of a Romance-Action film, this seemed to interest the group, but it was pointed out that most action films include the element of romance, e.g James Bond.
- For clothing ideas, it would depend on the type of film, day to day clothing in certain settings or in 'The Great Gatsby' where extravagance is needed this is acceptable or almost expected.
- The genre of horror/ vampire was strongly disliked by the group in the interview, so it is lucky that my film is not going to be of this genre. This discovery could also help with how I target my audience.
- When questioned about the possible locations it was favoured that the place be 'cool' and 'exotic' either with the weather or the specific room/ area, e.g Gossip Girl was suggested to have locations which are desirable and only the extremely rich could afford, the only possible way I could use this in my film would be through Chloe's clothing.

From these results I concluded that the majority of people preferred a comedy genre, although I am going to use a romance genre and so I will need to change my target audience in order to attract customers. The most popular choice for main characters was a male main character and my film will include half a male and half a female main character. The audience research shows that the audience were indifferent about how fast or slow or any introductions made within the first 3 minutes and I think this is due to the fact that it depends on the film genre and so it was not obvious to which genre I was asking the question. It is shown that the audience were annoyed by cliff-hangers which gives me the idea I should use one as although they were annoyed, they were annoyed as they wanted to continue to watch, my general idea will be to involve a cliff hanger which reveals the main character at the end of my three minute clip. A further conclusion to be made is that the cast of the film are very important in whether or not the person will watch or enjoy the film and so especially as my main characters will be in a relationship it is important for the audience to desire or be jealous of at least one of these characters.
